Basics of Dialup

Dialup is the cheapest way to get online. It also provides you with the slowest connection speed. Downloads and webpages will load much faster on broadband than on dialup.

To use dialup, you will need a dialup modem. Computers were commonly sold with dialup modems inside them, but this is being phased out as more people are turning towards broadband. To check if your computer has a dialup modem, simply check the back of the case for a port that a standard RJ11 phone line can plug into. Note that you may have an RJ45 (network) port, which is slightly bigger than an RJ11. If you don't have an RJ11 port, you don't have a dialup modem and will need to buy one. You can get them in stores for roughly $30-$50.

When you connect using dialup, your computer will use the modem to make a local call. During this time, you will be unable to use your normal telephone as the line is already in use. If someone tries to call you, two things can happen depending on whether call waiting is enabled. If call waiting is disabled, they will hear an engaged tone. If call waiting is enabled, your dialup connection will be disconnected and your phone will ring.

Dialup is portable, meaning you can use it from any phone number or location. You can take it with you as you travel. All you need is a phone line to use.

Summary:

  • Dialup is cheap
  • Dialup is slow
  • Dialup cannot be used at the same time as your phone
  • Dialup is portable
